Summer time means summer fun. Here in the United States, we are blessed with nearby beaches and lakes. Memorial Day is here to kick off summer this weekend. I need to start thinking about our family summer bucket list, and one of the things I really need to add is a boating activity. It has been a while but I remember going to Lake Tahoe when my boys were little, and found a photo of one of them on a jet ski, but now is the time they can actually learn about safety and really enjoy it, PLUS it was absolutely gorgeous up there with snow-capped mountains in July.

But what's really on my mind is fishing trips with my dad. For the men in my family, there's just something about recreational fun on the water - they are addicted! Some know that my dad was a fisherman back in his native country and he also owned and operated a commercial trolling (shrimping) boat out of New Orleans a few years ago, but besides doing it for a living and retiring from that, he still really enjoys being out on the water and loves the small fishing boat he has now.

I remember visiting my dad when my oldest boy was only two years old. He was so proud and wanted to take pictures with his grandson next to his boat. We even went fishing with him a couple of times out of Clear Lake, Texas. He was catching fish left and right while my cousin barely caught one. It was pretty hilarious. Fishing is my dad's favorite thing to do, and I hope that my boys will always remember their fishing trips with their Grandpa and continue to love boating. It has been too long, but I want to go boating every time we visit even though I have no idea how to catch fish, also because I just want to hang out with him while he's doing what he loves.

Boating is fun for all ages and lucky for us, there are resources out there like DiscoveryBoating.com to make it easy for both new and experienced boaters. Not sure where to start? Just answer questions like what activity is it for, how many passengers, what's the desired boat length, propulsion, and is it trailerable? You'll find everything from Freshwater Fishing, Saltwater Fishing, Watersports, Sailing, Overnight Cruising, Personal Watercrafts, and Day Cruising. Then compare all the different selections. They also have water safety information and licensing.
