Last week we went to the Opening Night of the hilarious and inspiring Broadway Musical Kinky Boots at the Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa. With music by the iconic Cyndi Lauper, the show is about a man named Charlie (Steven Booth), who inherits his father's failing shoe factory, and takes a chance on creating a rather unexpected new line of boots, encouraged by his fashionable, new cabaret star friend, Lola (Kyle Taylor Parker).

Burgundy is the color of a hot water bottle. Red is the color of s-e-x!The character Lauren, played by Lindsay Nicole Chambers, a factory employee with a love interest in Charlie, is a brilliantly hysterical and talented actress! Her comedic timing and animated facial expressions were spot on, not to mention her singing voice, which was stellar. She is hilarious in the "History of Wrong Guys" song where she realizes she has a crush on Charlie.
The musical has some good themes and life lessons intertwined with comedy, and great music that makes you want to get up and dance! There is an interesting parallel story line between Charlie and Lola and their father/son trials. Their conversations and story lines are full of good life lessons that pull at your heart strings, as both characters gain confidence in who they really want to become, and grow through each others stories and inspiration. The number "Not My Father's Son" is an emotional and brilliant ballad with excellent song lyrics by Cyndi Lauper.
PRE-SHOW ACTIVITIES
When you go see this show, be sure to get there early, or dash out to the lobby at intermission, to take advantage of all the free photo opportunities and fashion-themed activities they have set up. It is too much fun! Everything is set up an hour before the show begins, plus available at intermission, as well.
- There is a special 24-foot fashion runway for video and photo opportunities on the Orchestra Terrace Level lobby. Patrons are able to strut their own fancy footwear to hit songs from the ‘80s. Plus they have fun dress up props and wigs!
- There is a photo opportunity on the Loge Level lobby with a two-dimensional cutout of the famous red boots. These you definitely don't want to miss. They are too cute!! You stand behind the boot cutouts on their red carpet, and it looks like you are really wearing the iconic boots!

- Boot bedazzling on the Orchestra Level lobby. Patrons and designer-wannabes can add their personal ‘look’ to a high-heeled boot illustration using an assortment of supplies provided by the Center. It was so fun to decorate the giant shoe posters with rhinestones and other embellishments!

Overall, this is definitely a fun and inspiring musical show worth seeing! I am so glad my sister and I got to have a great evening out at Segerstrom Hall!
