Easy 4-Step DIY Pumpkin Planter Centerpiece! #ArmstrongGarden

Wondering what to do with all your uncarved pumpkins from last month? I have an easy project for you to try. Last month, I was at Armstrong Garden Center, and they challenged me to make a pumpkin planter with some mum plants. If you know me, I do not have a green thumb so was a little discouraged, but was willing to give it a try. Well, I have to tell you it was super easy, and if I can do it, anyone can do it. How about making a pumpkin planter centerpiece for your next fall party? They're really fun and festive. Note: It will last about 48 hours.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 1 - Pumpkin (the size will depend on the size of the plant you select)
  • 1 - Plant of Choice (I used a medium-sized Mum Plant)
  • Plastic Wrap (can be a small trash bag) for lining. Make sure there are no holes.
  • 1 - Bread Knife to cut off the top of the pumpkin
  • 1 - Large Trash Bowl
  • 1 - Large Spoon for Scooping

STEP #1 - Cut off the top of your pumpkin.

The size should be slightly bigger than the planter that comes with your plant.

STEP #2 - Clean out pumpkin.

Remove the filling from the pumpkin with your large spoon, and put everything in your large trash bowl.

STEP #3 - Line inside of pumpkin.

As mentioned, your centerpiece will last only about 48 hours. The pumpkin is like cut flowers, because after you cut into it, it starts to decay. You want to keep moisture away from your pumpkin by lining it with a plastic wrap or plastic trash bag before you place your plant inside it. Important: You'll want to make sure your lining doesn't have any holes or will leak.

STEP #4 - Insert your plant.

Insert your plant without removing it from the planter and enjoy your beautiful centerpiece! (You can also add moss, ivy, or other indoor plants around your flowers.)

Watering Tip!

Mums are late blooming seasonal plants that need to be watered often, but it does not like to be sitting in water. Take your plant out of the pumpkin before watering, and let it drain completely before reinserting back in your pumpkin.

This was a really easy project to do. I wish the centerpiece lasted a little longer than 48 hours, but it was really fun to do. I will definitely try this again maybe for Thanksgiving or Halloween next year. Armstrong Garden Center have classes all year long, and I hope to make it to the next one.
