RECAP: Top 7 Things We Enjoyed at Youth Expo 2013 @OCFair #YouthExpo

A couple of weekends ago we checked out the Youth Expo and had a great time - TWICE! It was educational and informative with resources and hands-on demos. The Reptile Zoo was there too. Top seven things we really enjoyed (not listed in order of preference):

#1 - The Centennial Farms

I want a Super Salad Garden just like this one...

Centennial Farms at OC Fairgrounds (c) Let's Play OC!

Lots of opportunity to see the animals up close in their animal pens. They had free hay rides, an oxen team demo, a Bug Barn, and scavenger hunts. My kids liked petting the baby chicks in the Farm House.

#2 - STEM Showcase (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

We saw a few different cool things - teenagers racing with remote control robots, Irvine Valley College was building a life-sized Iron Man out of foam, and a showcase of go karts sponsored by the Art Institute of CA. You will be amazed.  In the Robotis Kids Lab workshop, my kids got to build a puppy that was battery-powered.

The Science Project with LENA Jellie Beana was pretty fun. (Their first time in gloves and goggles.) She's only 9 and wrote a book called Science Matters.

The kids got to climb inside an ambulance and EMT professionals were there to talk about their programs.

#3 - School Art Competitions

There were lots of  “Make & Take” Activities. Supplies were provided and local professionals and staff were available. I also enjoyed checking out the school art competitions.

#4 - The Toddler Play Zone

I freaked out a little when I saw my kids throwing eggs in a barrel. Don't they look real?

#5 The 4-H Competitions and Livestock Exhibits

"Local youth are judged on their abilities to raise small livestock, their understanding of animal and veterinary sciences and their display projects on community service, aerospace, entomology, electricity and more." One of the little girls showed me how to hold her bunny.

#6 - Scarecrow Competition

This was a group/family competition. The one on the left won Best Original and my favorite on the right won Best of Show.

#7 - The Gourmet Food Trucks

It was nice to have great options without having to leave. We tried yummy pizzas at TJ’s Woodfire Pizza,  spicy gumbolaya at Ragin Cajun (a favorite), and oven-warm ice cream sandwiches by Chunk N Chip. Yes please! There were many others that weekend.

There was so much to see and do. We hope to make it to the next one. I took a ton of pictures. You can see more in my photo gallery. To learn more about the Youth Expo 2013, check out my previous post.

Did you get to go this year? What were some of your favorites?

Disclosure: This was a FREE event open to the public and we received food vouchers and tickets to carnival rides. All opinions are my own. All images (c) Let's Play OC!
